Personality: Thom is -- not the easiest person to get along with. The brief times we see him in canon prove he is just as stubborn and clever as his sister, if not more so. He is proud, rather arrogant, and sharp-tongued. He would much rather prefer the company of books and scrolls to human beings -- unless those humans have something that is of value to him, whether it is knowledge or simply someone he likes. He shows little regard for the possessions and work of other people, casting spells that will cause rather large disruptions without even a second thought. The one person he is shown to actually care about other than himself is his twin sister, Alanna. He will do nearly anything she asks of him, including disguising himself as a girl for a short time in order to go learn magic as he wanted to do instead of becoming a knight. It is true, he is still extremely difficult with her, but they are both used to it by now, and trade affectionate barbs quite often. If he considers someone worthy of his respect, they will get it, but even that is rare.

He is likable enough if left to his own devices, though, aside from the one thing that proved to be his downfall. Thom is rather unbelievably arrogant and vain, possibly due to to hiding the truth depth of his power for so many years. If someone insults him, he will try his damnedest to prove them wrong and prove that he is much better than they think. His pride is easily pricked -- with enough goading, in canon, he embarks on a spell that is extremely dangerous to both his own welfare and that of the realm of Tortall. On that note, if you flatter him enough, too, he will quite probably bend to your will.

Despite all the arrogance and pride that Thom has, he really is clever. One would have to be, in order to reach the status of Master at the age of eighteen. He knows well enough to know that Roger is dangerous, and advises Alanna to be wary of him if she can. He can be charming when it suits him to be, and aches to learn as much as he possibly can about magic. He is an attentive and eager student underneath all the masks, and shows a bit of a taste for the good life, once he finally gets to court. Had circumstances turned out differently, Thom could have been an extremely powerful mage.

Abilities/Powers:

powers: the Gift -- the Tortallan term for someone who is ‘gifted’ with magic. Thom’s just so happens to be very powerful -- he is the youngest Master in the eastern lands, having gained the title at 18. Most people wait until they are in their 30s at least. His Gift, like his sister’s, is purple. Both he and Alanna are able to use their magic in a variety of ways, though Thom tends towards the more esoteric.

- fire/light creation - he can create a ball of fire in the palm of his hand
- he has studied and learned the ‘Words of Power’, that can tell him what the purpose is of a thing and whether or not it is magical in origin
- due to his close bond with his twin sister, he is able to use her Gift as it was his own, if his is too drained or he needs more power in order to perform a spell.
- More on the Gift and its properties can be found here, as we rarely see Thom in the series and only know most of what he is capable of by hearsay.

Anything involving big things/possibly hurting/helping other people will be dealt with via permissions post and mun contact!

skills:

- ...does being easily manipulated/charmed by handsome men count as a skill, or as a detriment.
- he is pretty useless at most lordly sorts of things, like riding and hunting and swords. Leave that to the sister.
